Smoke Damage Home Claims Help
Smoke from a fire will create odors, causing stains, and is very acidic. Leaving residue on items that can corrode surfaces when combined with the moisture in the air. This combination will cause items to rust. Rust causes arcing in electricity which in return can cause a future fire.
That said, it is our opinion that any items affected or damaged by smoke must be professionally cleaned if and when possible, or replaced entirely. Especially electronic components. Worse, smoke can seep into hidden areas of a home, that must thoroughly and professionally be cleaned then encapsulated for odor control. Many times, these hidden areas often need to be opened up in order to gain access to that area in order to be professionally cleaned. This accessing and opening up of walls, ceilings and or a floor will cause further damage to the home.
The HVAC hard galvanized duct work in a home will need to be thoroughly cleaned when possible and then deodorized. Spiral Flex duct will typically require replacement because this type of duct cannot be cleaned or manipulated like hard metal ductwork. In addition, most flex duct will have insulation on the inside of the plastic covering making it impossible to clean. The insulation must be replaced.
The Institute of Inspection Cleaning (IICRC) is the authority in our industry that sets the standards for “Smoke Damage” remediation standards that must be followed for health risks and exposures. Smoke contains toxins from products that were in the fire and burned off. Plastics, and fabrics that burn are very dangerous and affect the air quality posing serious health risks. Especially, for those who have respiratory issues and allergies.
